Polishing - Surface stain removal
Once scaling is complete teeth are polished with a slow speed hand-piece and rubber cup attachment. A gritty paste is used to remove surface stains. For those with gluten sensitivities, there is no gluten in the polishing pastes.
Stain comes in two forms: intrinsic (part of the tooth structure) and extrinsic (a layer on top of the tooth surface). Only extrinsic stain can be removed via polishing.
